MEDITERRANEAN WORKSHOP ON THE REHABILITATION OF INJURED SEA TURTLES
ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece organised a Mediterranean Workshop on the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles in co-operation with the Municipality of Glyfada, Athens. The Workshop was held on November 19-20 within the Municipality of Glyfada Town Hall.
The Workshop was organised under the LIFE-NATURE Programme, co-funded by the EU aiming to reduce the mortality of sea turtles at sea. Over 30 experts from Greece, Italy, Spain, Israel and Croatia participated in the workshop, as well as observers from Turkey. Other participants who greeted the workshop included the European Commission – Directorate General for the Environment, the Ministry of Environment, the Minstry of Mercantile Marine, IUCN, the UNEP’s RAC/SPA, Research Institutes, Universities and Environmental NGO’s.
During the workshop, the participants exchanged experiences and expertise in matters concerning the operation and running of sea turtle Rescue Centres and their role in the protection of sea turtle populations in the Mediterranean. The conclusions drawn are important for the upgrading of existing Rescue Centres and the Stranding Networks that support them, while the first important steps were taken for the establishment of a Mediterranean Network of Rescue Centres.
At the end of the Workshop, the Mayor and the Municipal Council of Glyfada held a reception in honour of the participants within the Glyfada Golf Club. The Mayor, Mr Sfakianakis, greeted the participants, gave an outline of the Municipality’s ten year long co-operation with ARCHELON and renewed the will to support ARCHELON’s Rescue Centre which is situated within the 3rd Marina of Glyfada.
