Enjoy the Beaches Responsibly: Together We Protect the Sea Turtles of Kyparissia Bay!
As the beaches of Kyparissia Bay begin to welcome more and more visitors, ARCHELON is back in the area for another summer, ensuring the safe nesting of the loggerhead sea turtle. With a strong presence in the Bay since 1983, our goal is to protect the species and its harmonious coexistence with humans.
There has been a significant increase in the number of sea turtle nests in Kyparissia Bay since 1995. This is due to ARCHELON’s protection measures against predation that have been implemented in the area for decades. The Bay hosts the most nests of the species in the Mediterranean. Last year, 6,700 nests were recorded in the main nesting habitat (9.5 km from Arkadikos River to Neda) with an additional 1,200 nests north of Neda to Tholo (4.5 km). This is amazing news for the ecosystem and pushes us to become even better at managing the coastal habitats of the area.
This year, a total of 100 Greek and foreign volunteers are taking part in ARCHELON’s Conservation Project in Kyparissia Bay, working to protect the turtles and the environment. So far, more than 2,000 nests have been recorded in the area. In order to best manage the protected beaches, we have adapted our field work protocols. As always, ARCHELON records and monitors all nests that are identified without exception. However, this year, the marking and protection of nests with grids is focused on selected points, so that our measures can be more targeted and effective.
We want you to know the way we work, so that you can enjoy the beach during the day, without misunderstandings:
-In parts of the beach with intense human presence (busy areas): All nests will continue to be marked and protected with grids. Additionally, we will apply selective nest shading before hatching. Why are we doing this? To prevent any incidents of disturbance, destruction of the nests by umbrellas, trampling or hatchlings disorientation by artificial lights. We will also ensure that exposed predated nests are not in public view. Therefore, in these busy areas you may get the impression that there are more nests than in quieter areas.
-In parts of the beach with limited human presence (quiet areas): Approximately 20% of the nests will be marked and protected with grids. As a result, the natural phenomenon of nest predation by animals may be more intense, as nature finds its own rhythm.
Every nest needs our attention and respect. We thank you for your understanding and contribution to our work. Protecting sea turtles is everyone's business! Together, we can ensure a beautiful and safe summer for everyone, people and turtles.
