ARCHELONʼs participation in workshop about dealing with emergencies at sea
From November 20th till November 23rd a workshop took place in Barcelona, which was organized by Sea Alarm Foundation, as a part of the European Program that evaluates the preparedness for wildlife (The European wildlife preparedness assessment program) and focuses in preparedness and dealing with emergencies at sea, regarding sea turtles. ARCHELON, which possesses an over-30-year experience in scientific research on sea turtles’ biology and in addition over 20 years has been offering medical care to sea turtles, took part actively in this project.
The purpose of this program is to gather experts of the Mediterranean Sea about protected species (sea turtles, seabirds, marine mammals) in order for the experts to cooperate and point out ways to deal with these emergencies.
During this workshop for sea turtles, means such as the importance of having a plan in order to deal with emergencies and how this plan has to be structured were stressed. Through table top exercises the possible causes that could lead to an emergency derived (such as fishing and extraction of oil) and a simulation of dealing with a an emergency took place (affiliated with oil or not).
The working group stressed the problem of not having a plan in order to deal with emergencies that could threaten species in the Mediterranean Sea, and started the creation of this plan.
