Discover the secret nature of Crete: Sea Turtle Beach Walk with ARCHELON
Every summer, on the beaches of Rethymno and Chania, an ancient visitor returns to give birth to their new generation: the Loggerhead sea turtle. ARCHELON works tirelessly to ensure that these beaches remain safe for turtles and that the little hatchlings have the opportunity to reach the sea safely.

"The Sea Turtle Beach Walk is an environmental activity that is aimed at everyone and especially at families with children. By participating, you have the opportunity to experience the magical world of the sea turtle up close and contribute actively to its protection," says George Vrambas, ARCHELON's Project Manager in Rethymno.
"Following the positive response from visitors last summer, this year we will have two guided tours available daily, both in Rethymno and Chania, available in English and Greek. We are seeking to collaborate with hotels and tourist agencies to promote the Walks on the turtle beaches, thus contributing to the sustainability of tourism in Crete,” explains Danae Tsaparli, ARCHELON's Project Manager in Chania.

Why take the Walk on the Sea Turtle Beach?
- Get close to nature: Walk along the most natural part of the beach in Chania and Rethymno, where you will have the opportunity to see tracks of female sea turtles, see the nests themselves and, depending on the season, even see hatchlings reaching the sea. Your guide, a member of the ARCHELON volunteer/research team, will share with you fascinating information about the life cycle of sea turtles, their biology and the vital ecosystems they rely on.
- Learn about sea turtle conservation: ARCHELON has been at the forefront of sea turtle conservation in Greece since 1983 and its volunteers have been monitoring and protecting nests along the coast of Crete for decades. During the walk, you will hear about the threats these incredible sea creatures face —from natural challenges to human activities— and learn how you can contribute to their survival. With the knowledge you gain, you will have a greater appreciation for marine life and the fragile ecosystem of the Mediterranean.
- Become an advocate for sustainable tourism: By participating in this activity, you are not just an observer - you are part of the solution! Your reservation includes the adoption of a sea turtle hatchling for €30, directly supporting ARCHELON's efforts. This small gesture plays a decisive role in ensuring the future of sea turtles and their ecosystems.
The important details
- The activity starts on May 15, and online reservations are already open! To participate, you must book your spot on our website.
