Amvrakikos Project 2025: Special Call for a Field Leader

ARCHELON’s project in Amvrakikos Gulf aims to collect data on sea turtles frequenting in the area. Main activities include the identification and capture of turtles at sea, collecting biometric data and tagging of individuals. At the same time, various public awareness actions may be carried out in collaboration with the Environmental Education Center in Kopraina and the Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park.

The Amvrakikos Project field leader is a highly motivated intern, working under the supervision of the Zakynthos Project Manager and ARCHELON’s Research Coordinator. The position provides hands-on experience in conservation projects and leads to improved communication and leadership skills.

Main duties include:

  • Overall supervision, Setting up and closing down the project, situated within the Environmental Education Center of Kopraina, in collaboration with the Zakynthos Project Manager

  • Guiding the volunteers and ensuring the correct implementation of research protocols on how to locate, capture, identify, record and measure sea turtles

  • Creating the weekly shift schedule, and organizing the daily expeditions to the field site situated between the mouths of the Arachthos and Vovos rivers.

  • Training and supervising a team of up to 4 volunteers

All necessary guidance and training will be provided by ARCHELON’s personnel, who rely on the ever-evolving practices of programs that have been running for 40+ years.

The Amvrakikos Project Field Leader is an internship, and as such is a non-paid position. Field Leaders are provided with accommodation, basic food expenses and insurance against accidents. Depending on the experience and particular skills of the applicant, additional benefits may be available.

Duration of internship: 25 June – 31 August 2025

Qualifications:

Successful applicants must:

  • Be Over 23 years of age

  • Be able to communicate fluently in English (Oral and Written)

  • Hold a Biology, Marine Biology, Oceanography or other relevant degree

  • Hold a valid EU or International Driver’s license (min 2 years’ experience)

  • Have experience on managing databases (MS Office)

  • Be able to drive an inflatable boat with a small outboard engine

  • Be able to work long hours, often in adverse weather conditions (extreme heat, humidity)

  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Have Good communication skills

Will be appreciated:

  • Experience in the “rodeo” turtle capture technique

  • Previous experience working with volunteers
