Raising awareness for the sea turtles in Corfu
In recent years, the beaches of southeastern Corfu have hosted an increasing number of loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nests due to the impacts of climate change, making their systematic monitoring and protection more important than ever. ARCHELON's new conservation project on the island is implemented with the support of the Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF) and the Mar-Bella Collection hotel group. At the same time, ARCHELON's scientific work in Corfu is being strengthened through the LIFE ADAPTS project, co-funded by the European Union and the Green Fund, which aims to improve our understanding of the impacts of climate change on sea turtles and coastal ecosystems.

To mark the launch of the project, ARCHELON carried out a series of environmental eduation and outreach activities across Corfu, bringing local communities and visitors closer to sea turtle conservation.

On July 4th, the ARCHELON team visited the Mar-Bella Hotel of the Mar-Bella Collection Hotel Group, where an interactive educational activity was held at the hotel's Kids Club for children from different countries. Through presentations, games and creative crafts, the young participants learned about the sea turtle life cycle and the challenges it faces. The activities were followed by an information stand at the hotel pool, where visitors of all ages learned about sea turtle biology, the threats the species faces and the ways they can contribute to its protection. A particular highlight was an interactive game simulating the hatchlings' journey from the nest to the sea.

The activities continued on Saturday July 5th, with a beach clean-up at Gardenos beach, co-organised by ARCHELON, the Ionian Environment Foundation and Mar-Bella Collection Group, with the participation of the local Vitalades Cultural Association, the Strongyli Kindergarten, and the Agios Mattheos Parents and Guardians Association.

Participants cleaned the beach, visited protected sea turtle nests and learned about the importance of safeguarding nesting beaches and the role everyone can play in conserving this remarkable species. Through scientific research, nest protection and public awareness activities, ARCHELON contributes to the conservation of sea turtles and the valuable coastal ecosystems of Corfu.
