The nesting season has officially begun in Koroni - Messinia!
The first nests of sea turtle Caretta caretta were found in Koroni by ARCHELON’s volunteers on 19th and 20th of June. Unfortunately, the very first was found predated by wild animals, the second was protected successfully. The nesting season has officially begun in Koroni!

ARCHELON – The Sea Turtle Society of Greece, began its project in Koroni back in 1995, and since then is monitoring daily the nesting beaches Zaga-Memi in order to protect this beautiful creatures, their nest and habitats as well as to collect scientific data.
The nesting area Zaga-Memi is included in the Natura 2000 site with GR2550010 code, site name “THALASSIA PERIOCHI NOTIAS MESSINIAS” and is an area with a highly environmental and scientific importance for the survival of the species. Every year, 50 nests in average are recorded and protected by ARCHELON.

If you want to help this ancient visitor, make sure that the beach is free from beach furniture, ask your host to stuck their sunbeds during the night. Switch off or cover bright lights which are visible from the nesting beach. Don't move nest signs or protective cages above the nests. Don't touch the hatchlings. It is important that they find on their own their way to the sea. Don't light fires at night on the nesting beaches and avoid using vehicles on the beach. For more information, you can visit ARCHELON’s information Kiosk located in front of Koroni’s Municipality.
