The National Marine Park of Zakynthos: New President – New Start
The first meeting of the Management Board of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ) took place at Zakynthos on 19 February under the new President Mr Drosos Koutsoumbas (associate Professor of Marine Biology at the University of the Aegean). Prof. Koutsoumbas succeeded the previous President Ms Amalia Karagouni-Kyrtsou, after her four-year dynamic term. At the meeting some basic issues concerning the operation of the Park were discussed. The environmental NGOs active in Zakynthos (ARCHELON, WWF, MOm) are represented at the Management Board by Smaro Touliatou (regular member, ARCHELON) and Harikleia Minotou (substitute member, WWF).
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos, established in 1999, is one of the most important environmental jewels in our country and its Management Agency one of the oldest and most active in Greece. Nevertheless, there are still some unresolved issues which should be tackled by the new Board.
With the onset of the new Presidency it is hoped that solutions will be sought to some important matters, as the improvement of management of the protected area, mainly at sea, as well as the Parkʼs further integration of the local community. The NGOs, as of their part, will support any effort of the Management Agency aiming towards better protection and upgrading of the area, as well as towards wider participation of the local authorities and people.
