Now Crete has its own First Aid Station

The First Aid and Environmental Station of Pagalohori (a village within Municipality of Arkadi near Rethymno, Crete) was inaugurated on 31st July. The First Aid Station was created as part of the LIFE-Nature Project implemented by ARCHELON aiming to reduce mortality of turtles in the Greek seas. The First Aid Station is located in an ideal location, close to the Rethymno nesting beach and at the same time in a central position on Crete, a designated ‘hot spot’ due to the great number of sea turtle strandings reported through the National Stranding Network.

The place has been used as a First Aid Station for injured sea turtles since 2004. Six sea turtles have already stayed there before being transported to the Rescue Center or before being released back to their natural environment.
The new Station is addressed to local and foreign visitors and plans to act as the epicenter of ARCHELON’s interaction with the local community.
The Mayor and the Town Council of Arkadi have supported the operation of the Station from the very beginning, first by donating the use of the building and secondly by undertaking the majority of the restoration works.

The Mayor of Arkadi, Mr. Manolis Manolakakis inaugurated the meeting along with the ARCHELON President, Nikos Raissis. Another member of the Board, Evi Gerokosta narrated tales and legends on animals, which created a welcoming and cozy atmosphere. The event was attended by the Town Council of Arkadi, representatives from the local authorities, ARCHELON volunteers and friends as well as the villagers.
ARCHELON is proud of the Station’s existence as it was created with the support of the local authorities and it presents the perfect opportunity to expand our communication with the local community.
