How was the Sea Turtle Festivities this year?
Every year we hold a Sea Turtle Festivities Day at ARCHELON’s Rescue Center in Glyfada. It’s a day for young and old, for every friend of the sea and the environment, dedicated to the sea turtles that travel in all seas. A celebration for a global environmental cause.
Last Sunday, the 19th of May, the volunteers who take care of the turtles welcomed about 500 people in the Rescue Center and guided them providing information about these magnificent marine creatures.
The Art Team “OMADA TECHNIS PORODOS” with Elias Pitsikas presented theater acts inspired from ARCHELON’s fairy tale “A love story in the Mediterranean”.
Kids were invited by volunteers in a simulation game about what is happening in a nest and following a wounded turtle coming in the Rescue Center.
In the old train wagon kids played games and under the tent everybody was happy doing crafts.
Both children and adults were touched by ARCHELON’s documentary on releasing two successfully treated turtles from the Rescue Center back to the sea (Blue Yard Hub, 2018). We also showed the documentary “The history of straws” kindly made accessible to us by the "Plastic Free Greece” initiative.
The organizers of the festivities, were happy with the turn out of the public and also with the volunteers and friends of ARCHELON who participated in the events! They were also very pleased that the visitors shown a lot of interest and concern not to disturb the 29 sea turtles hosted currently in the Rescue Center!

32 Years Returning to Nest: A Record Reproductive Lifespan for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle in Kyparissia Bay
When we analyzed the turtles’ codes, we realized that this was a turtle that had been tagged for the first time in the area 32 years ago! Specifically, turtle P4849 was tagged on July 7, 1993 and today is the turtle with the longest documented reproductive lifespan in Kyparissia Bay!
