BUILDING OUTSIDE PLANNED SETTLEMENTS DESTROYS THE COUNTRYSIDE OF GREECE
ARCHELON express its solidarity to the Minister of the Environment for the starting of public dialogue for the gradual restriction of the so-called “building outside existing settlements”.
Greece is the only country in Europe that allows land owners to build a house outside areas with a building plan or outside existing settlements. The Greek countryside and especially the islands have suffered severe degradation and are gradually losing their beautiful landscapes and traditional character because of such building.
Further coastlines, wetlands and other sensitive areas are in danger to be built legally! On the other side, traditional villages and other human settlements are dying slowly. Instead of building in the country, humans should return to existing settlements. In this way also the wasteful dispersion of public commodities (electricity, water, etc.) over large areas will be reduced. (DM)
