Become a Sea Turtle Guardian in Lakonikos Bay
ARCHELON offers unique opportunities for volunteers to contribute to the vital mission for the protection of sea turtles all over Greece. One such project, based in the stunning Lakonikos Bay, provides a truly unforgettable experience. Gracie Rowe and Claire Whitehead, two dedicated individuals who made a significant impact on the project in 2024, talked about their experience.
Gracie, an ARCHELON veteran, began her journey as a volunteer several years ago. Her passion for sea turtles quickly led her to take on leadership roles, culminating in her 2024 position as Public Awareness leader for the Lakonikos Bay project. Gracie's days are filled with a variety of tasks, from conducting beach surveys to engaging with local communities. "Working as a leader here is incredibly rewarding," she shares. "It's about connecting people with nature and inspiring them to become advocates for sea turtle conservation."
Claire, a recent addition to the ARCHELON team, brought her enthusiasm and knowledge of animal biology to the Lakonikos project. As a volunteer, Claire's days are filled with excitement and adventure. From monitoring turtle nests to assisting in hatchling releases, she's had the opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible life cycle of these ancient creatures. "Seeing a hatchling make its way to the sea is a truly magical experience," Claire says. "It's a reminder of the importance of our work."
The success of the Lakonikos Bay project relies on the collaboration and dedication of individuals like Gracie and Claire. Their combined efforts have contributed to the protection of countless sea turtles and have raised awareness about the critical conservation challenges they face.
If you're looking for a rewarding and unforgettable experience, consider volunteering with ARCHELON this summer. Join the dynamic team in Lakonikos and make a difference in the lives of these magnificent creatures. We need you immediately for May and June to welcome the turtles of 2025!
