ARCHELON at the British Chelonia Group Annual Symposium
19th March 2005. Milton Keynes, UK.
At the request of the British Chelonia Group (BCG), Alan Rees travelled to the UK to make an overview presentation on ARCHELON\'s work studying and protecting sea turtles for 21 years. Alan talked about ARCHELON\'s Environmental Education and Public Awareness Programmes that both started back in the 1980\'s as well as the long-term monitoring of Greece\'s most important nesting beaches and the rehabilitation of sick and debilitated turtles in ARCHELON\'s Rescue Centre that was founded in 1994. His talk complemented the diverse selection of the day. The first presentation concerned veterinarian assessment of tortoise blood-calcium levels, relevant to correct up-keep of pet tortoises and yet another was on the subject of conservation of the iconic giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands.
The British Chelonia Group has previously supported ARCHELON\'s work concerning nesting beach temperature assessments, useful for estimating hatchling sex ratios and more recently in the important survey of Syria\'s beaches that discovered a hitherto unknown important nesting beach for the critically endangered Mediterranean green turtle. Thus, it was with great pleasure Alan took the opportunity to explain more fully to the members of BCG, ARCHELON\'s diverse field of activity for sea turtle conservation.
