It is known since 1983 that the loggerhead sea turtles breed on the island of Kefalonia. The activities of the local not-for-profit environmental association “Katelios Group for the Study and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life” ( were developed in this area, within the framework of a research project for the sea turtles from the UK.

Since 2000, the sea turtle project in Kefalonia has been carried out by the local Katelios Group in cooperation with ARCHELON. The project is carried out throughout the island, with emphasis on the Katelios-Mounta Cove, which has been included in the European Network NATURA 2000 site “PARAKTIA THALASSIA ZONI APO ARGOSTOLI EOS VLACHATA (KEFALONIA) KAI ORMOS MOUNTA” (Site Code: GR2220004).
