We save dozens of sea injured sea turtles every year
In both cases they sometimes need surgical interventions either to remove the hook from the esophagus or to amputate the damaged flipper. Collaborating closely with Lito Kritseli, our veterinarian, we can operate those turtles at her practice.
We have been able to operate over 10 injured individuals this year, making it possible to return successfully the sea turtles to their natural environment within a year.
Long lines as well as various types of trawling nets are responsible for the death of thousands of turtles in the Mediterranean waters. Turtles are opportunistic bottom feeders. They usually eat slow moving creatures such as mussels, sea urchins, or crabs. They donʼt prey on fish of squid, too fast for them. But on occasions they might eat them off a hook or in a net.
We also provide environmental education to over ten thousand school children, students and visitors at the ARCHELON Sea Turtle Rescue Center located in Glyfada.
You can freely visit the center with friends of family on the weekends from 11:00am to 5:00pm.
