The very first caretta caretta nest in the Bay of Kyparissia for 2009!
Itʼs been known that the Bay of Kyparissia is the second largest nesting area for the caretta caretta in the Mediterranean. Together with Zakynthos they gather the 38% of the total Mediterranean sea turtle egg production. Even so, these two major “maternity wards” are treated unequally with regards to their protection and the funding opportunities through the E.U. budget.
And while the Marine Park in Zakynthos has made good progress in the protection and fundraising sector thus benefiting the whole island and the growth of tourism, the Bay of Kyparissia remains without any legal protection status, although the area has been included as should in the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas.
ARCHELON has been working methodically in the Bay of Kyparissia since 1983, collecting nesting data and protecting the nests threatened mainly by predation by foxes and vehicle circulation on the beaches. The field work is conducted with the permission of the competent Ministry of Agriculture and the support of the local authorities and municipalities, by trained volunteers who come particularly for this purpose from around the globe.
ARCHELON undertook the initiative to reconstruct the old train station building in Agiannaki, close to Kalo Nero and turned it to a Nature Information Centre, hosting appropriate environmental learning programs for schools and organized groups.
