The first Caretta caretta nest of 2018 in Lakonikos Bay
On May 27th, ARCHELON’s volunteers spotted the first sea turtle nest of Lakonikos Bay on Mavrovouni beach for the season. This event was the occasion for our first contact with the Management Authority of Parnon, Moustos, Mainalon and Monemvasia, whose area of activity will include the Laconian Gulf in the future.

The Mavrovouni, Valtaki, Selinitsa and Vathi beaches in the west part of the gulf, as well as the beach of Evrotas estuary, host an average number of 200 Caretta caretta nests each year.
Some of these beaches welcome numerous quests during the summer and their natural condition has been degraded.
ARCHELON’s field team will help to accomplish a healthy interaction between visitors and these ancient mariners. However, we will also need your cooperation and support by following some simple measures.
ARCHELON’s volunteers can be found every day from the end of June at the info point in Mavrovouni and from 5:30 on the beaches mentioned above.
Have a great summer!
