The establishment of the “Amvrakikos Alliance”
On November 14, 2023, iSea, the Tethys Research Institute, ARCHELON, the Hellenic Ornithological Society, the Department of Geology, and the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the University of Patras, together with the Blue Marine Foundation, endorsed their vision for a long-term collaboration and a collective commitment that aims to improve the management of the Amvrakikos Gulf, by the establishment of the "Amvrakikos Alliance".
The Amvrakikos Gulf is one of the last megafauna sanctuaries in Greece, hosting a significant population of dolphins, dalmatian pelicans, sea turtles, as well as sharks and rays.
Therefore, these seven Organizations, with the help of the Management Unit of Acheloos Valley and Amvrakikos Gulf Protected Areas (N.E.C.C.A) joined forces at the beginning of the year, within the framework of the project "Contributing to the effective management of the National Wetlands Park of the Amvrakikos Gulf". After the preparatory actions for creating this Alliance, the seven Organizations contacted the local community and discussed its vision and actions for the coming years. While actively engaged with the local community, the participating Organisations are carrying out research actions related to the natural environment in Amvrakikos in order to fill in the knowledge gaps through scientific data.
The Alliance's vision in collaboration with the local community is to highlight the unique ecological value and the natural and cultural heritage of Amvrakikos, for the most effective management, restoration, and protection of its ecosystems and biodiversity.
From the very next day, the "Amvrakikos Alliance" continues its collective action to fulfill its goals and vision!
