SEA TURTLES RESCUERS

The training seminar for sea turtles rescuers completed successfully on Saturday 30th of May. The seminar took place in ARCHELONʼs Rescue Centre in Glyfada.
Twenty seven (27) participants from different social and professional backgrounds attended the lectures delivered on a series of issues such as sea turtles biology and habitat, first aid and emergency assistance techniques to injured sea turtles, as well as the actions relative to dead turtles. In 1994 ARCHELON set in operation a national rescue network for sea turtles in close cooperation with the port authorities, numerous local bodies and entities and individuals.

Unfortunately, in recent years thereʼs been an increase in the number of deliberate deaths counted, usually following an incidental capture in fishing gear and nets. The deliberate deaths and abuse are caused by some individuals, alleged professional fishermen, who bring disgrace on their colleagues. On the other hand, many fishermen have gained a deeper understanding of the marine eco-system, they have come to value sea turtles more alive than dead and appreciate our role as NGOs.

Frequently, the rehabilitation period lasts for months, requiring a significant allocation of funds mainly for medical supplies which can not be covered by the limited resources of ARCHELON. Here as well the absence of support by the state authorities, namely the competent Ministry of Agriculture is strongly felt.
