Participation of ARCHELON at the 1st Herpetological Symposium
Goulandris Natural History Museum and the Greek Herpetological Society successfully organised the 1st Herpetological Symposium on the 4th and 5th of November. With a wide range of speakers covering every possible topic on reptiles, attendants were informed about the reptile species of Greece, their geographical range, about the myths and traditions that accompany them, medical cases due to reptile poisons, alien species found in Greece and how they affect the populations of native species and the CITES Convention and how it regulates their trade.
Also, reference was made to the breeding methods of reptiles as pets and for possible diseases that may be caused by non-following the health and safety appropriate conditions depending on the species and its needs. The symposium was accompanied by an educational reptiles and amphibians’ exhibition that included typical representatives from different continents.
Bringing such events to the light of the general public is important as they bring us closer to Greek and global fauna, while promoting our understanding of their role in nature. Specifically for reptiles this kind of hands on experience helps to discourage any demonization that may accompany them.
