Ordinary heroes of the protection of sea turtles
Our everyday hassle for carrying out everything that matters to our personal world, our duties and obligations, does not often leave us with the energy to appreciate the wonderful world surrounding us. Nature at large and the millions of living organisms that support our planet go largely unnoticed.
Suddenly one reads on the screen the phrase: “There is a phone number people can call when an injured sea turtle is found – we’re on the line 24/7.”It is about ARCHELON’s Rescue Center! “The turtle is brought here to the rescue centre by bus, ferry or sometimes even by plane.”
Behind each sea turtle reaching the Rescue Center there are people: the people who saw it, who reported to the authorities, who called the Rescue Center and got instructions, who carried it with their car. Those who talked to the drivers of the buses, the crews of the ferry boats or aircrafts. There are the trained volunteers who waited to get the injured animal and everybody else supporting the Rescue Center operations. They are ordinary people, but at the same time it seems they are also heroes because they accepted such an unusual action to interfere with their every day hassle.
There are more of these stories from other Mediterranean countries, collected through collaboration in Life Euroturtles, a programme co funded by the European Union and the partners, amongst which is ARCHELON.

32 Years Returning to Nest: A Record Reproductive Lifespan for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle in Kyparissia Bay
When we analyzed the turtles’ codes, we realized that this was a turtle that had been tagged for the first time in the area 32 years ago! Specifically, turtle P4849 was tagged on July 7, 1993 and today is the turtle with the longest documented reproductive lifespan in Kyparissia Bay!
