Oh where, oh where are the sea turtle eggs?

ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, is a non-governmental, non-profit organization funded by donations from the public. We do not have the ability to cover all the nesting areas in Greece, and unfortunately no government agency involves itself with the protection of sea turtles.

Sea turtles skillfully hide their eggs to fool scavenging dogs and foxes, and along with these animals, frequently succeed in fooling humans who try to protect the eggs. Local residents or visitors in the above-mentioned areas often try to help by building perimeter fences (with sticks or poles bound with ʽcrime sceneʼ-type tape) around areas where turtles come out of the sea at night and seemingly make their nests. This is a very important attempt, but as you can see from the above photos, many times the eggs are actually quite far away from the area which residents tried to protect.

Because of our many yearsʼ experience in this type of situation, we were able to find the eggs, which fortunately had not been disturbed. In fact, we are all looking forward to the day (in about eight weeksʼ time) when the hatchlings will pop out of the nest and make their way to the sea.

To help sea turtles even more, you can download and print our information posters, which can be hung up at the entrance to nesting beaches and close to nests so that other visitors to the area can be alerted.
