On the occasion of World Sea Turtle Day (June 16), last Saturday the ARCHELON Sea Turtle Rescue Centre opened its doors to the public for this year’s Turtle Festival, themed “Into Deep Waters.”

Around 400 visitors, both children and adults, attended the event at the Rescue Centre and took part in a day full of learning, fun, and discovery about the fascinating world of the sea.

Young visitors participated in interactive activities through which they learned more about the loggerhead sea turtle, its diet, and the remarkable journeys it undertakes by using ocean currents. At the same time, they had the opportunity to explore the rich marine life of the Mediterranean and learn about species that inhabit Greek waters.

Through hands-on games, children discovered how sea turtles are monitored and cared for at the Rescue Centre. They also took part in activities simulating the nesting process of the loggerhead turtle, learning about the challenges hatchlings face from the moment they emerge from their nests.

Throughout the day, guided tours of the Rescue Centre gave visitors the opportunity to gain a closer understanding of the work carried out to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured and sick sea turtles.

A particularly special moment of the event was a live connection with ARCHELON’s conservation project in Kyparissia Bay. Visitors were able to observe a sea turtle nest in real time and learn more about the protection of Greece’s most important nesting beaches.
