NEW DEADLINE for Field Leader Applications: 07/02/2022
The sea turtle monitoring and conservation projects of ARCHELON are implemented by teams of volunteers/researchers on the beaches of Greece where the loggerhead sea turtles nest. More than 500 people, mostly of young age, from around the world participate in these popular projects as volunteers for nature conservation, every year.
About 30 experienced Field Leaders are selected every year to lead the project teams which are based on Zakynthos, the Peloponnese (Kyparissia Bay, Koroni, Lakonikos bay) and Crete (Rethymno, Chania, Messara Bay).
The ARCHELON projects are running for more than 30 years. “Thanks to the monitoring carried out by volunteers and their Field Leaders, we managed to show the effects of global warming on the sea turtles in the Mediterranean” explains Daphne Mavrogeorgos, Director of ARCHELON.
Field Leaders are leading the teams and ensuring the proper on- site implementation of sea turtle monitoring actions (Monitoring Field Leaders), public awareness actions (Public Awareness Field Leaders) and the good state of ARCHELONs Research Stations (Camp and Volunteer Leaders).
“If you have participated in sea turtle conservation projects or other similar activities, you are welcome to join us as a Field Leader this summer” explains Galini Samlidou, one of the Project Officers at ARCHELON.
Some of the Field Leaders of previous years combined their participation with an Internship and obtained new skills and professional career at ARCHELON.

When we analyzed the turtles’ codes, we realized that this was a turtle that had been tagged for the first time in the area 32 years ago! Specifically, turtle P4849 was tagged on July 7, 1993 and today is the turtle with the longest documented reproductive lifespan in Kyparissia Bay!
