International Turtle Day 2016 Celebration at ARCHELON
Towards the end of May most people think of Spring that’s past them and of the Summer ahead.
For us turtle people, this time period means much more. It’s time for the return of sea turtles to their birthplace and the beginning of the yearly spawning. An integral part of this time period is the celebration which is organized every year at ARCHELON’s Sea Turtle Rescue Centre for the International Turtle Day. After making it an institution in the past few years we are transferring the celebration to the last Sunday of May.
This year’s event surpassed our expectations from all previous years. Resonance with the public was impressive. Their good mood, their touching and encouraging comments about ARCHELON’s work were the motivating force for us to continue in this hard season. The purpose of the event was to inform as great a number of people of all ages as possible, and through games and activities to sensitize them even more considering our maritime ecosystem since they are all going to visit some beach during the upcoming summer.
Through eleven games and activities, presentations and tours, about 500 people with an age range from pre- school to elderly have learnt about the history of ARCHELON, the work of volunteers, the biology of and threats to sea turtles, figuring out all together that we can help an endangered species by doing small but important things in our daily life.
Of course, none of it would have been successfully realized if it weren’t for the precious help of 25 volunteers. And for that we thank them warmly!
Also thanks a lot to all the families who visited us and we became a large group of friends!
Remember! On the last Sunday of May 2017 we will be waiting for you for the celebration of International Turtle Day at the ARCHELON Sea Turtle Rescue Centre!!! HAPPY SUMMER TO EVERYONE!
