Celebrating biodiversity in Flisvos Marina
Back in May this year we heard the news that Flisvos Marina was planning an event about the Wild Side of Life and thought that sea turtles should not miss this occasion. Eventually, we received the invite to join the Biodiversity Festival by the organizing team of SYMPRAXIS and a small group of part time volunteers of ARHELON’s Rescue Center was set up for the occasion.
The information table of ARCHELON operated during the afternoons of the weekend from 7/6 to 9/6, together with several other nature related organizations including ANIMA, HELMEPA, Mediterranean SOS, WWF- Greece, MoM for monk seals, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of nature.
What intrigued this participation was the opportunity to meet and interact directly with people living near the sea side in Athens about protecting marine wild life, as well as the chance to inform ourselves about the Integrated Environmental Management System (IEMS) of the Flisvos Marina.
It was interesting to find out that Integrated Environmental Management Systems are about society and environment together. With regard to society, for example, the Flisvos Marina together with 35 other organizations have held several public events related to health, sports and culture, which were supported by 1000 volunteers in the last 12 years.
As with the environmental goals, we noted the recycling system in place, which uses 16 bins to separate recyclables and the necessary training of the staff in waste management. We also noted that water in the Marina has a quality suitable for bathing waters and that special care is taken to reduce water and electricity consumption.
That was all about this event and we wish to thank everyone that made it possible. We are sure sea turtles like stories like this. If you have a story about environmental compliance in a sea related organization, please share it with us!
