Aquila Rithymna Beach Hotel becomes an Advocate for ARCHELON in Rethymno
ARCHELON is pleased to announce that Aquila Rithymna Beach has become a leading supporter of the Rethymno Sea Turtle Conservation Project, choosing the "Sustainable Tourism Advocate" category. The hotel's generous donation directly supports the costs of conservation activities during the 2025 and 2026 nesting seasons.
A commitment to sustainability is at the core of ARCHELON's efforts. This year we approached hotels along Rethymno beach to seek partners in funding the actions to protect the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). This initiative directly enables businesses to contribute to the preservation of the local ecosystem that makes their destination so attractive.
ARCHELON's project in Rethymno brings together volunteers, local communities, and the tourism sector to create a cohesive network for sustainable tourism. In 2025, the Rethymno Project managed to protect hundreds of nests, despite intense human activity on the beaches. They trained hotel staff, raised awareness among visitors from all over the world, and invited children and adults to discover the magic of nature just a few steps from their sun loungers.
ARCHELON representatives recently met with the hotel's staff and management to officially hand over the Certificate of Support. "Our good relationship with Aquila Rithymna Beach dates back in the 1990s and has already played a vital role in protecting turtle nests in the area for all these years," says Giorgos Vrampas, ARCHELON's Project Manager in Rethymno. This effort proves that sea turtle protection is more than conservation action; it's a living example of how sustainable tourism can be achieved.
