Applications Now Open for 2026 ARCHELON Field Leaders Posts!
ARCHELON is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 Field Leader positions across all nesting projects.
Field Leaders are volunteers responsible for leading the teams and ensuring the proper on-site implementation of sea turtle monitoring and protection actions (Monitoring and Protection Field Leaders), public awareness actions (Public Awareness Field Leaders) and the good state of ARCHELON’s Research Stations (Camp and Volunteers Field Leaders). Together they formulate the weekly schedule, boost the motivation of volunteers and manage occurring problems, in cooperation with the Project Manager.

Why Become a Field Leader?
It is an opportunity to grow personally and professionally, gain hands-on conservation experience, and play a direct role in safeguarding sea turtles and their habitats in Greece. Leading volunteer teams from around the world is an invaluable professional experience, that will help you build problem-solving and decision-making skills in real field conditions. These are core competencies for roles in conservation, NGOs, education, tourism, research, and beyond.
Explore the Different Roles
As a Monitoring and Protection Field Leader you will gain experience in:
- Wildlife monitoring and field survey techniques
- Nest protection, tagging, and scientific data collection
- Handling and documenting strandings
- Habitat assessment and threat mitigation
This experience is highly valued for careers in ecology, marine biology, environmental science, and conservation project management.

As a Public Awareness Field Leader you will gain experience in:
- Giving presentations and leading educational activities
- Communicating scientific topics to diverse audiences
- Representing an environmental organization professionally
- Managing outreach events and public engagement campaigns
These skills are essential for a career in environmental education, communications, sustainable tourism, and community advocacy.

As a Camp and Volunteers Field Leader you will develop practical skills in:
- Logistics and resource management
- Scheduling and coordinating diverse groups
- Overseeing the smooth operation of a field base
- Maintaining equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure
This is excellent training for field project coordination, human resources, humanitarian or expedition leadership roles.

Though Field Leaders are volunteer positions, they include a range of benefits:
- Non-fee training
- Free accommodation at the camping site
- Coverage of basic food expenses
- Basic insurance against accidents
- Additional benefits for candidates with previous Field Leader experience
- One day off for each week of participation
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be over 20 years old
- Hold a valid car driving licence
- Be fluent in English
- Be available to spend 3–6 months on site, depending on the project
- Experience in conservation or previous involvement in ARCHELON projects is highly valued.

32 Years Returning to Nest: A Record Reproductive Lifespan for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle in Kyparissia Bay
When we analyzed the turtles’ codes, we realized that this was a turtle that had been tagged for the first time in the area 32 years ago! Specifically, turtle P4849 was tagged on July 7, 1993 and today is the turtle with the longest documented reproductive lifespan in Kyparissia Bay!
