A successful year for Loggerhead nesting in Koroni- thanks to all our friends
Every summer since 1995 ARCHELON carries out the loggerhead sea turtle conservation project at the sea turtle nesting beach Zaga-Memi in Koroni, (south Peloponnese). The volunteers and researchers of ARCHELON walk 2.7 kilometers every day during the nesting season to protect and monitor each nest. In 2022, the team recorded and protected approximately 106 nests, and thousands of baby turtles found their way to the sea.
About 4,000 people participated in the public awareness activities organized by ARCHELON with presentations in hotels, on the sea turtle nesting beaches and at the Information Station in the town. The ARCHELON project in Koroni has many friends.
We are grateful to the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros for their support and for providing storage space to the ARCHELON team in Koroni, and to the camping “Koroni” for hosting all the volunteers in this year's project.

32 Years Returning to Nest: A Record Reproductive Lifespan for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle in Kyparissia Bay
When we analyzed the turtles’ codes, we realized that this was a turtle that had been tagged for the first time in the area 32 years ago! Specifically, turtle P4849 was tagged on July 7, 1993 and today is the turtle with the longest documented reproductive lifespan in Kyparissia Bay!
