“Kaveiros” from Samothraki is healthy and free!

A kind of unusual group of people appear on the beach. They are volunteers and supporters of ARCHELONʼs Rescue Centre carrying not sea towels, straw mats and suntan lotions but a caretta-caretta sea turtle!
Its name is “Kaveiros”, a male turtle with a carved carapace length of 69 cm that was transported from Samothraki to ARCHELONʼs Sea Turtles Rescue Centre, for further rehabilitation and eventual release, exactly one year ago.
The officers of the port police who initially treated the turtle, gave it the name “Kaveiros” after an ancient king that ruled the island of Samothraki.
For the past weeks Kaveiros has been swimming well and feeding without assistance and generally showing a normal behaviour. It was time to return to the sea, thus being the twelfth sea turtle released in 2009! Now, will Kaveiros swim up north for food or south and west to the nesting areas? Wherever you choose to go, have a safe journey!
