2011 Lakonikos Gulf field program underway
This year once again, ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, is welcoming back its volunteers in the Lakonikos Gulf field program. The reproduction activities of the Caretta caretta in key locations are being systematically recorded, and the information serves as an indication of nesting activity in the wider area. Along with data collection, all nests which are located are protected from natural predators.
Besides recording and protecting the nests, the field team runs an information booth on Mavrovouni beach, outside of the Meltemi campground (which is where they stay during the field season), and gives presentations at hotels and campgrounds in the area to inform the public and raise their awareness.
So far, the team has recorded a total of eight nests on Mavrovouni, Valtaki and Selinitsa beaches. We expect that even more mother turtles will soon use these beautiful beaches to lay their eggs.
ARCHELONʼs motto is “We can all live together.” In a uniquely beautiful environment like the Lakonikos Gulf, we can all be a part of making this idea a reality. During the summer, while we are enjoying the sun and the sea, the fact that we share some beaches with these ancient animals should fill us with a sense of joy.
