19 September: This yearʼs Environmental Education Programme begins

Schools have opened! Together with them, this yearʼs ARCHELON Environmental Education Programme has also started. To arrange an appointment for a school visit, please call 210-5231342.

The Rescue Center can accommodate groups of up to 50 students, from Monday through Friday. You can choose between a 9.30 appointment, or an 11.15 appointment.

Since 1994, ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, in cooperation with the town of Glyfada and with the approval of the Agricultural Ministry, operates the Sea Turtle Rescue Center at the 3rd Marina in Glyfada. The Center is the only one of its kind in Greece. For 17 years, injured sea turtles from all parts of Greece are cared for at the Rescue Center, where they are treated by veterinarians and especially trained personnel; the Centerʼs goal is to rehabilitate the injured turtles and to eventually release them back into their natural environment. Visitors learn lots of information about the injuries and threats to this endangered species, and can see where and how the animals are cared for until they are healthy enough to return to the sea.

Itʼs worth noting that the facilities at the Center are made up of old train wagons donated by OSE to ARCHELON in 1994.

Last year, 10,000 students and their escorts honored us by visiting the Center. This year, we once again warmly welcome students of all ages: from day care centers, from kindergartens, as well as from primary, middle and secondary schools from Attica and from all over Greece.

Group visits must be booked in advance. To arrange one, please call Elly Tarabe at 210-5231342.

For additional information, you may contact Anthoula Toyia by e-mail (education@archelon.gr) or by telephone (6932640949).

Weʼre waiting for you! (A.T.)
