Coordination for the protection of sea turtles in Rethymno: Local authorities and tourism businesses join forces
Rethymno, 5th of April 2024: At a time when sustainable development and environmental protection are increasingly gaining ground, the Regional Unit of Rethymno, in collaboration with ARCHELON, took the initiative to bring local authorities and tourism businesses to the same table to effectively protect the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).
The meeting, which took place on April 5th, 2024 in the building of the RU of Rethymno, touched on key issues, such as the observance of conservation measures for the protection of sea turtles. Given that the tourist activity on the nesting beaches is expanding, active participation of the tourism sector in the implementation of the measures is necessary.
The aim of the meeting was the prompt information and preparation of the local authorities and businesses on ways to protect Loggerhead sea turtles, before the beginning of the tourist season. The Deputy Governor of Rethymno, Maria Lioni, and the General Secretary of Public Property, Naya (Athina-Maria) Kollia, welcomed everyone at the event, stressing the importance of cooperation.
The head of the Department of Environment and Water Economics, Manos Nikoloudakis, underlined the need for cooperation and informed about the inspections that will be carried out by the Regional Unit. ARCHELON's Project Manager for Crete, George Vrambas, presented the conservation measures in detail, focusing on critical actions such as the removal of sunbeds and umbrellas after sunset and the reduction of light pollution.
ARCHELON's Sustainable Tourism Officer, Thanos Bollas, presented a new initiative: "TUI Turtle Aid Greece", a three-year project implemented by TUI Care Foundation and ARCHELON. The project includes a Turtle-Friendly Hotel Certificate (TUI Turtle-Friendly Certificate), to promote sustainable development, protecting the Loggerhead sea turtle and guiding tourists towards environmentally friendly choices. Grecotel hotels, including Caramel Boutique Resort & Creta Palace Luxury Hotel, were awarded for their pro-environmental practices with the TUI Global Hotel Awards. This recognition is a testament to their ongoing efforts and dedication.
The meeting ended with a discussion, where questions were asked about the best methods for the protection of sea turtles, the development of tourism and the smooth operation of businesses.
