As a teacher or a group leader
Since 1985 ARCHELON has been carrying out a multifaceted educational project all over Greece, approved by the Ministry of Education and based on modern pedagogical methods. Thus the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) has become the most popular example of wildlife in Greece and a symbol of life threatened by extinction.
The aim of ARCHELON's Environmental Education Programs is to use the sea turtle as an example to make understandable the fundamental functions of nature and the human place within it, considering the common understanding that "we all share the same Earth." The programs are carried out by specially trained staff and volunteers of ARCHELON.
A. SCHOOL VISIT TO THE RESCUE CENTRE
1. Educational Programs at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre
Book a VisitThe educational programs of the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Glyfada, Attica, are available throughout the school year. We offer two different programs; two distinct educational experiences tailored to different age groups and academic levels.
(All programs include a guided tour of the turtle treatment tanks, where visitors hear the turtles’ individual stories and observe their rehabilitation.)
1. Sea Turtle Rescue Mission International & Foreign Language Kindergarten or Primary Schools (Duration: 90’- 5 euros per student)
This program offers an engaging introduction to the world of sea turtles and is designed to inspire environmental stewardship in students of all levels. The session covers the 150-million-year evolution and biology of the species, their fascinating life cycle from the nesting beaches to the open ocean, and the various hazards they encounter both at sea and on nesting areas. Participants will explore the "Rescue Chain", learning how injured turtles are rescued, treated, and cared for at the Centre, while discussing how daily human actions can protect these endangered animals.
2. Scars of Survival: Stories Written on Shells International & Foreign Language Secondary Schools, Higher Education Students (Duration: 90’- 5 euros per student)
Designed for older students, this program provides a scientific inquiry into marine biodiversity and species resilience in the Mediterranean. The curriculum focuses on evolutionary biology and the specialized adaptations of sea turtles, alongside a critical analysis of the threats they face from anthropogenic factors like fishing gear, boat strikes, and habitat loss. By examining the life cycle and nesting beach vulnerabilities, students gain a deeper understanding of rehabilitation protocols and the technical actions required to sustain the species, bridging the gap between classroom theory and field conservation.
