EVS Volunteers at the Rescue Center
ARCHELON once more is hosting three incredible EVS volunteers, Alan Coyle from Ireland, Fanny from Luxembourg and Danielle from Sweden, who came in Greece in order to help with the protection of sea turtles. As part of EVS (European Voluntary Service in the context of ERASMUS+) programme they get accommodation, food allowance, pocket money, mentoring but also they have the chance to get to know the Greek culture and language and get experience in the rehabilitation of a threatened species. We asked them why they wanted to do EVS programme and why they chose ARCHELONʼs projects as well as to tell us few words on their experience up to now, and this is what they answered. From ARCHELON point of view we would like to thank them for their continuing interest and help of all these months they have stayed in the project.

Why did you want to participate in EVS?
I just finish school and donʼt exactly know what to continue to study.
For years I want to become a volunteer, so that was the perfect time ?. Leave home and going, for a few month in another place in the world.
ARCHELON have an outstanding reputation internationally for protecting sea turtles. I think that it is very important and something that I want to be a part of.
Itʼs also very interesting to work with the tourists and visitors of ARCHELON. Showing and explaining to them our work and the current situation with the ocean. We have to pay attention to this and itʼs important that people realize that things cannot continua how they are, people need to be made more aware that a lot of human activities are causing damage to the ecosystem in the ocean.
How it has been?
I had a great time, the work is so interesting you see a point in what you are doing and also the result after. Picking up an ill turtle, taking care of it a release it at the end.
Working with Volunteers from different counties is so funny, all this different accents, habitudes, Characters and all this mix together in one train wagon. :p

Quite honestly, the answer to that question is something I wonder myself every day. When I got the offer to go to Greece, I didn't know what ARCHELON or EVS was, I was just informed what the tasks meant, and I said yes, and one week later I was on the flight and here I am now. My experience up to now is great. Im gonna be here for 6 months, 3 more to go! The homesickness is nothing to play with, but I'm working as best as I can! The most enjoyable job I think, is to wash the turtles, like the picture here, because then you get extra close to them!
Why sea turtles?
Easy, because I have always loved turtles and sea reefs, and I don't know why actually! My cuddlytoys when I was younger was turtles and I was getting stuck at the television when it was programs about turtles and the sea world. I also wanted to work with animals that we don't have in my country.
Why do I want to participate in EVS?
I really just want to make it for these 6 months. To do something good in my life that not cost a thing from my self except my energy and power. I wanted to try something new, to live in another country with other peolpe!
