Thomas Cook Injured Turtle Sponsorship
This year the Zakynthos project has witnessed the successful rescue of four injured turtles. Among these turtles, was an injured male named Oasis. Oasis was found by two Italian tourists on the 13th of August while out at sea. This couple spotted two turtles tangled together in fishing line; after attempting to cut the turtles loose, one swam away but the other was too injured to leave. They then contacted ARCHELONs Zakynthos team who quickly came to his aid. Upon being brought to Archelons Rescue Centre in Athens the damage to Oasis’s front flipper was unfortunatly deemed irrepairable. He had surgery the following morning to remove the damaged flipper and is still undergoing treatment but doing well.
The treatment of injured turtles in our Rescue is crucial, but rehabilitation is very expensive. This is why it is always an amazing gesture when someone chooses to support this work through our injured sea turtle sponsorship programme. Last week, we were lucky enough to receive this support from travel agency Thomas Cook, who have generously offered to sponsors Oasis’s treatment for two months. A charity day was held at one of Thomas Cooks hotels, Marelen in Kalamaki, hosting an ARCHELON information table and environmental education games for children.
The morning was a great success with many interested and supportive tourists and the official sponsorship of Oasis. This sponsorship will cover two months of treatment for this male loggerhead and go along way to ensuring his rehabilitation.
Sponsorships such as this also give a huge boost to our organisation, besides ensuring that Oasis can be returned to the Mediterranean population.
