"Raphael" in the blue and green waters of the Ionian Sea
Archangel Raphael is an angel of Christianity, Judaism and Islam and his name means “God heals”.
On the 3rd of August, Rafael, a male loggerhead turtle, of 72 cm length and 46,50 kg weight returned to his home. He was released by ARCHELON in the blue and green waters of the Ionian Sea.
Rafael was found on the 18th of August 2014 with a head injury on the “Archangel” beach of Lakonia where he was named after. Local people communicated with the National Rescue Network that ARCHELON maintains with the close cooperation of the Port Police and Rafael was transported immediately to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center in Glyfada.
There he received the treatment and support of ARCHELON volunteers and almost one year after his serious injury the time came to return to his natural environment.
The release event took place in Zakynthos at Crystal beach, in Kalamaki area with the help of three special organizations Atlantica Eleon Grand Resort & SPA, Castelli Hotel and Nefis travel that support the effort of ARCHELON for many years.
A lot of people arrived on the beach early in the afternoon in order to be present in this rare occurrence. ARCHELON volunteers made sure all the visitors were informed for the rules of observation during the release. Total silence, no use of flash and stay on the beach until Rafael is quite far in the water.
The release was quite successful, since Rafael did not meet any difficulty heading to the sea and left behind overwhelmed visitors and volunteers who were cheering for a long time after Rafael was lost from their eyesight.
It is very pleasant that local community, volunteers and visitors we contributed in this effort for the protection and conservation of our natural environment and the animals that live in it.
We can all live together!
