ARCHELON Τhe Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece
On the 15th August ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece was informed of another incident of a dead turtle in the bay of Laganas in Zakynthos. Unfortunately, since May, more than 20 cases of dead turtles have been recorded by ARCHELON, of which 11 have been recorded in the marine area of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. ARCHELON volunteers found the dead turtle at the port of Agios Sostis. This was a young male animal, which had severe blows on the shell and on the head from a boat collision.
A sea turtle named “Adonis”, after a three month stay in ARCHELON’s Rescue Center in Athens, went back to its natural habitat. “Adonis” is a juvenile sea turtle that weighs 22kg and is about 50cm long. It was transferred there on May 20th 2017 with plastic ingestion. There with the help of our volunteers and specialized veterinarians it was fully rehabilitated.
This summer the feeding of sea turtles with fruits and vegetables in Laganas Bay in Zakynthos is a major threat and cause of disturbance for this protected species. The Phenomenon was first recorded in the marine area of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos in September 2016. Unfortunately, it is being recorded to a much greater extent this year, from eco-tour and privately rented boats, in order to attract the wild animals by throwing fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes and peaches, to take clear photographs.
